  • The initial talks about the 18 m x 16 m resdential building ranged in topics from the heritage of boat building and passionate woodworking all the way to family bonds and privacy boundaries.

To align the specified geometry with the goals of the project, we proposed a metaphorical trunk-like layered typology. The deepest layer would feed the entire building and connect between the 3 levels, second layer houses all service rooms, technical installations and entrances, serving as a buffer ring between public and private. And the farthest layer, closest to the facade, retains an undisturbed connection to nature to each main room.

To draw onto the clients' values of modern family living, the living room had a main and central role, literally and figuratively, connecting daily routines and opening up at the sun-flooded corners of the building.
It is important when working with a concept to understand the potential and limits it brings along. The idea of a core and layering functions doesn't stop at floor plans and typology. The concept was projected further on the facade. Besides breaking down the facade, the cutbacks and tiny recesses outline and support every layer from inside out: Windows, sun blinds, railings, balconies.
With deliberate placement and sizing to accomodate the rooms behind the exterior, a simple facade can function as way more than just a barrier; it complements both sides of the wall practically and aesthetically.
